SARAH LOUISE MURRY PETTIS
Sarah Louise Murry Pettis died at the age of 92 on December 2, 2018 in Providence, Utah. She was born on July 6, 1926 in Woodland, California to Margaret Sherwin Murry and Charles Raymond Murry. A lifelong resident of Yuba City/Marysville, California, Sarah graduated from Yuba City High School. In 1944 she attended the University of Nebraska, where she met her beloved James Pettis of Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Sarah and Jim transferred to the University of Southern California, where they both graduated in 1948. She was a founding member of the USC chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
Sarah and Jim married in 1949 at her parents’ Yuba City home. They established the Murry-Pettis Ranch, a 160 acre prune farm near Marysville, where they raised three daughters, many horses and many more golden retrievers. Sarah taught in local elementary schools for fifteen years. She was active in Alpha Sigma for 65 years, a past member of Peach Tree Country Club, and the oldest living charter member of the First Presbyterian Church of Marysville where she and Jim served as deacons. Sarah and her family spent wonderful summers at their Lake Tahoe home and she and Jim enjoyed spending winters with friends on the beach of Baja California after they retired. Sarah had a sharp mind and competitive spirit. She loved playing dominoes and could beat nearly anyone, even in her 90s.
She is survived by her daughters, Margaret Pettis (Richard Carter) of Hyrum, UT; Marcia Pettis Field (Robert) of Diablo, CA; and Emily Pettis Ristau of The Plains, VA; three grandchildren, Cameron Field Palazzo (Marc), Blake Field (Lisa), and James Patrick Ristau; and two great-grandchildren, Carson and Halle Field. Sarah is predeceased by Jim, her husband of nearly 60 years; her brother, Sherwin Ray Murry; and her son-in-law, Ken Ristau.
The family sincerely thanks the caring staff of Cache Valley Assisted Living in Providence, UT and Signature Hospice of Logan, UT for their kind attention to our mother in her last years of life. A graveside ceremony will be held at noon on Saturday, April 27, 2019 in Sutter Cemetery, Sutter, California where Sarah will be laid to rest beside her husband.
