Dixie Mecham Whitaker

July 7, 1931 – February 9, 2018

 

Dixie Mecham Whitaker, our beloved mother has taken her beautiful voice to sing as a soloist in Gods angelic choir. Dixie was born July 7, 1931 in Brigham city, Utah to Harvey and Iris Mecham. Dixie married John “Jack” Milton Whitaker of “Homestead Whitakers” in Midway, Utah. She graduated from Box Elder High in Brigham City, Utah. Dixie spent 4 years at Brigham Young University where she was a lead vocalist in every opera for 4 years. After divorcing Jack, she was a second-place winner for the national New York Metropolitan Opera Auditions in Denver. Not long after, she took her children on an adventure to Hawaii to live and grow together.

 After 7 years, she then took her children to Monroe, Utah to finish school and be near the family. During this period, she worked for Judge Reed Blomquist as a judge’s secretary. After her children went off to college she moved to Salt Lake City and worked for now, “Century Link” phone company until she retired. Dixie broke her back twice, resulting in her using a walker for the remainder of her life. Despite her injuries, she formed a senior choir known as “The Music Maker Stars” which toured and entertained Salt Lake City’s retirement communities and care centers for 20 years. She also loved her time volunteering for the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City.

Dixie is proceeded in death by her first son Kevin, her Mother and Father Harvey and Iris Mecham and her beloved dog Mister B. Dixie is survived by her two sons Jeffrey and Tony and her beautiful granddaughters, Madilyn and Joy. Funeral Services will be held in her honor on February 17th 2018, with a viewing beginning at 11 AM and the Funeral service directly after at 12 noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints University Ward on 160 S University St Salt Lake City, Utah 84102.  Dixie’s internment will be held at the Annabella City Cemetery, in Annabella, Utah on Monday February 19th at 12 PM.
