Selmer, William (Bill) Luther
Selmer, William (Bill) Luther
It is with great sadness that the family of William (Bill) Luther Selmer announces his passing after a 15 year struggle with prostate cancer on May 17 th , 2022.
Bill was born on August 7 th , 1947 in Oshkosh Wisconsin to Irene and Morgan Selmer. Youngest of three children, Bill grew up in Milwaukee and spent summers in Rosholt, WI, at his family cabin. Many of his lifelong friendships were forged while spending his summers water skiing and fishing on Three Lake. In 1964, Bill caught the eye of his wife Jan at a basketball game at Nathan Hale Highschool. They started dating and, for the rest of their lives, were never found far from each other. Bill graduated from University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and went to work in the restaurant industry where he combined two of his passions, making delicious food and mentoring his employees. Bill later went on to work for Hardee’s restaurants. This brought their family into their next great adventure, and they moved west to Salt Lake City, Utah. Later Bill would leave Hardees to start his own catering business with his son, Todd. Bill retired from catering in 2009.
Bill will be remembered as a warm, wonderful, and hilarious husband, father, grandfather, and friend. As the unofficial “King of Hospitality”, his home was a touchstone for anyone needing to share a meal or watch the Sunday NFL line up. Fishing was Bill’s sweet spot and he loved to spin tales of his adventures while enjoying a beautiful sunset with his family and friends. Fish on ahead, Bill, and we will meet you at the campsite. We know you will be waiting for us with open arms and a Wisconsin fish fry.
Bill’s legacy of generosity and warmth will be carried on by his wife of 54 years, Jan, and his children Todd (Stacey Dobkins) Selmer, Heidi (Aaron) Updegrove, Nicole (Steve Cochran) Selmer and Ann (Billy) Bradshaw. Bill will also be affectionately remembered by his grandchildren, William, Aidan, Avery, Nicholas, Jake, Hannah, Liam, Megan, and Max. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morgan and Irene Selmer, and his sisters, Suzanne Kekar and Ruth Ticali.
A funeral mass will be held for Bill on Saturday May 28, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at 3015 E Creek Rd, Cottonwood Heights, UT 84093. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Bill’s name to the building fund at St. Thomas Moore, or Juan Diego Catholic High School.
